GENOS SPOTLIGHT ON

Mindfulness

WHAT IS MINDFULNESS?

According to Daniel Goleman, mindfulness practice is an essential practice of self-awareness, which is the first part of emotional intelligence. “The payoff is not only in being able to monitor what’s going on inside you and handle it better, but also in self-management, which is the second part of emotional intelligence. You are better able to manage your upsets, and to stay focused on your goals and marshal a positive attitude,” he says.

LEARN TO ACCEPT EMOTIONS

It is common for our emotions to ‘hook’ us into a storyline. For example, when feeling anger, we may ruminate over how someone has wronged us, or how unfair the world is. Going over and over these stories in our minds is likely to just prolong and intensify the anger. By learning to recognize and accept our emotions, we can remove ourselves from this consuming story and avoid being taken over by its message.
